Funke Akindele’s “A Tribe Called Judah” Sets Record as Highest-Grossing Nigerian Film
Since its debut on December 15, 2023, ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ has been setting unprecedented records in the Nigerian film industry.
It not only had the biggest opening weekend in Nollywood but also became the highest-grossing film directed by a woman and the highest-grossing Nollywood film ever, reaching the N1 billion mark domestically in just three weeks.
This achievement is set to surpass even ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,’ which took 16 weeks to cross a similar milestone.
The film’s success continued to soar, with box office earnings of N400 million within 12 days and over N122 million during its opening weekend, setting new industry standards.
By December 30, 2023, it had grossed over N728 million, making it the top-grossing Nollywood film and marking it as the fourth movie in Nigerian cinema history to earn over N376 million in the first two weeks.
Despite skepticism from some quarters about the authenticity of these figures, the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) confirmed the film’s exceptional admission numbers, indicating its widespread popularity.
In less than three weeks, it surpassed the admissions of major blockbusters like ‘Sugar Rush’ and ‘King of Boys.’
